Kuykendall’s Kennel reminds us to keep our dogs safe during the holidays by adhering to a few simple Do’s and Donts.
- DON’T give excessive table scraps, however, it is OK to give them a few small bites of thoroughly cooked or roasted turkey (not basted with spices). Give skinless and boneless turkey only and absolutely NO turkey bones or ham. Baked potatoes, steamed carrots, and unseasoned green beans are also acceptable holiday snacks.
- DO create a safe space: It is best not to force pets into social situations, especially if they are uncomfortable around strangers and large crowds. When hosting a holiday party or dinner, keep anxious pets separated from the crowd, preferably in a quiet room.
- DO pet-proof: Pet-proofing your house can keep them safe during the holidays. Keep table scraps, meat bones, ornaments, cords, ribbons, hooks and toxic plants (such as mistletoe, poinsettia and pine needles) out of your dog’s reach.
- DO make sure that your pet is wearing a collar with an ID tag. For many of us, the holiday season means having to get on the road with our pets, and once arriving at our destination, having to deal with large crowds and lots of doors frequently standing ajar, which is an open invitation for your four legged friend to escape and run away. That’s why it’s important to make sure your dog is wearing a collar with up to date tags. It’s also important to make sure you’ve updated your dog’s microchip.
- DO make sure that if you must leave your pet for an extended period of time, that you leave him with a responsible friend, or a kennel or dog boarder who you can trust.
